The study aimed to identify the difficulties faced by students living off
campus at Sultan Qaboos University and the possibility of predicting these
difficulties through some demographic variables. To achieve this goal a
questionnaire designed by Al-Zubaidi et al. (2002) was demonstrated among a
random sample of (597) students who lived off campus. Data was analyzed using
SPSS. The findings showed that the most critical difficulties students faced were
related to economic issues that represented in the high rise of housing rent; and the
insufficiency of allowance given by the University to meet life expenses. The
following most faced difficulties were the health-related issues, followed by
transportation, academics, activities, behavioral and finally social concerns. The
findings indicated also that there is a possibility to predict the difficulties facing off
campus students through (5) demographic variables: sufficiency of allowance
(negative correlation), commuting by taxi, College of Education, the family income
range from O.R. 501 to O.R. 1000 (negative correlation), and living in a villa. The
findings showed also a possibility of predicting the seven themes of the difficulties
through sufficiency of allowance (negative correlation), commuting by taxi,
College of Education, the family income range from O.R. 5O1 to O.R. 1000
(negative correlation), and living in a villa. The most suggestions raised by the
sample of this study to reduce the severity of difficulties were supervising the off
campus accommodation by the university; building on-campus dormitories; and
increasing the student allowance.
