The purpose of the present study was to investigate the temporal and spatial variations of the snow cover accumulation season in Iran. For this purpose, in the first step, the data of the sixth version of MODIS Terra and MODIS Aqua for the period of 2000 to 2018 (1379-1397 AH) on a daily basis on a 500 × 500 m spatial resolution were obtained for the whole of Iran. To reduce the cloud cover effect on the satellite data, three methods of reducing cloud effects were applied to raw data. In the next step, for each hydrological year and each of the 7,541,502 pixels covering Iran’s territory, the first day that snow cover was reported by the MODIS (based on the first day of Mehr) was extracted and that day was recorded as the start of the snow season on the desired pixel. Finally, an array of 7,541,502×1 was constructed in which columns indicated the first snow cover day. This process was repeated over 18 years of available data, and finally, a time-space matrix at 18×7,541,502 was constructed in which the rows represented the time and columns represented pixels. The analysis revealed that the snow cover accumulation season over the western and northeastern highlands of the country is advancing to winter; meanwhile, the northern and northwestern highlands of the country are retracting to autumn.
