Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the spectator on Action-specific Perception and performance in Distal and Proximal External focus attention condition. The population of the study included all female bachelor students of physical education faculty of Urmia University who had no professional and competitive sport experience in darts. Forty people were selected randomly then, based on the type of instruction they were divided into two groups, including distal external attention group and proximal external attention group. We used a dart throwing task and the participants performed 20 trials based on the type of instruction of their group, including proximal external attention (focus on the flight of the dart) and distal external attention (focus on the target) in two different conditions (with spectator presence and without spectator presence). Perceived target size test was performed at the end of the trials and before perform the Dart throwing task, participants filled out the Immediate Anxiety Measurement Scale (IAMS) in both conditions. Results of independent t-test and dependent t-test indicated that performance and perceived target size for both group decreased in spectator presence than without spectator presence, but this decrease was less in distal external attention group. The findings recommend that athletes to use effective strategies for appropriate control of anxiety and to reduce the disturbing effect of anxiety due to the presence of the spectator on Action-specific Perception and Performance, to be used of the instructions of distal external attention.
