In Esfahan, a new age in Iranian civilization began with the rise of the Safavid Dynasty. Economically strong and politically stable, this period saw a flourishing growth in many social events, engendering new viewpoints in ways of development in society issues. With important social concerns, the appearance of new patterns based on geometrical networks in the development of cities gave order to open urban spaces.
In a time of prosperous economic situation, the commercial network of the bazaar served as an artery linking the old urban center to a vast public square, Naqsh-e Jahan, the site of a new focal point around which the economic, political and religious facets of Safavid views gravitated. A major linking avenue, the Chahar Bagh, was creating the town’s main fusion, and viewing towards the Zayandeh Roud river and several liaison bridges such as Allahverdi Khan, Khaju, and many others, hence creating a greater social accessibility to different quarters and population. Each bridge coincides with a straight avenue running through the city from north to south. Bridges had two functional purposes, to link the town’s two parts, to function as a dam, but mostly, due to the progressive social views, to create places of encounter, rest and gathering for the people. Therefore, the bridge was conceived as a living urban space inherent to the town itself with different layers of rest, commerce and use, as well as benefiting from the agreement of the Zayandeh Roud River.
