Hermann Hesse (1877-1962), a German litterateur, became acquainted with the religious teachings of the West and the East in his childhood. His real life events and his interest in mystical studies led to the creation of his own particular style, which is quite evident in the story of Knulp. The theme of this modern story serves to describe the character of the mystic named Knulp, who can be considered the author's code name. Shams Tabrizi (582-685 AH), on the other hand, is an Iranian mystic and his stories are narrated in The Maqalat of Shams. There are similarities between the mystical notion of "Knulp" in the story of Hesse and "Shams Tabrizi" in Maqalat ,which can be studied and analyzed. In this paper, using descriptive-comparative method, after briefly introducing Hesse and explaining the place of mysticism in his thought, we examine the work of Knulp in terms of form and content and clarify the strong mystical features of this character. Afterward, we will briefly describe Shams's life and his mystical characteristics The study concludes by comparing the two works, Knulp and Maqalat, describing the similarities between these two mystical characters, Knulp and Shams, including "spiritual loneliness" and the "humor" of Knulp and Shams. However, Knulp's story is a literary work, but Maqalat is considered intuitive.
