The Aristotelian classifications and Western poetry patterns have had a significant influence over the studies of Persian literary genre in Iran. This is while, in every language, the historical, social, cultural, and structural factors play a very important role in literary genre identification. Therefore, literary adaptation seems to be essential for any kind of genre studies in Persian literature. “Quatrain” is one of the most popular forms of Persian folk poetry, which is recognized as a literary form. The question is, can Quatrain be considered as an autonomous literary genre? As with genre, a poetic form can be used for literary classification since its form and structure are recognized and distinguished in literary texts without ambiguity. Quatrain is distinguished from other genres of folk poetry due to its special structural and content features. Studying the common external and internal features of Quatrain is the key method to define a unique pattern and structure, which allows us to identify Quatrain as an autonomous genre. In this paper, one thousand folk Quatrains, selected from different regions in Iran, are examined to identify the features of the Quatrain as a distinctive genre. The results show that the Persian folk Quatrain is more than a literary form and can be adapted and characterized as a literary genre.
