"Imam ‘Ali is a perfect man since all the human values, such as love, courage, knowledge, honesty, unbending devotion to Islam, intel-lect, justice, freedom, and devotion have had their maximum growth in him and in a harmonious manner.
One of the contemporary and distinguished Persian and Urdu poets who has paid attention to Imam ‘Ali in his works, especially his poems is the north-Indian Muslim poet-philosopher Muhammad Iqbal Lahouri.
‘Due to his personal attributes, Ali was for Iqbal the mard-i mu’min and the fata par excellence; the seeker of truth and God, who lived an active, ener- getic life.
(Iqbal, 1985, 706) The attributes of Haydar symbolized thus not only a special potency in the individual, but also represented a distinctive vigor and strength in the community which was derived from the message of Islam.
Though Iqbal uses faqr in its traditional association as a positive aspect of life, which was the essence of the faith of prophets and saints, he connects it with his philosophy of action.
His poverty, faqr, indicated spiritual hu- mility and elevation because of the absolute sincerity with which he sub- mitted to God. On the other hand, Iqbal celebrates his faqr as an attribute that portrays his resolute strength and facilitates the action required to exalt human destiny.
He is a perfect man since all the human values, such as love, cour- age, knowledge, honesty, unbending devotion to Islam, intellect, justice, freedom, and devotion have had their maximum growth in him and in a harmonious manner."
