The Kharijites were among those groups of people who exited the circle of genuine Islam and Imam Ali’s Caliphate in the early Islam and at the era of Imam Ali’s government because of their misinterpretations of Islam; thus Imam Ali knew them heretics. In confronting clear arguments of Imam Ali, they deviated and defied his way and started fighting with his government. Although the Kharijite thought dated back to the era of the Prophet Mohammad, it grew in Imam Ali’s era especially during the Battle of Siffin and the issue of "Arbitration". In spite of the fact that the Kharijites were completely defeated by Imam Ali in the Battle of Nahrawan, in next periods of time, they started their conspiracy and invasion against the genuine religion with their untrue beliefs. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to investigate the historical backgrounds of the formation of the Kharijite sect via a descriptive-analytical method and library resources
