The present study attempts to investigate the retrieval of memories from autobiographical memory and its
relationship with problem- solving in depressed and anxious individuals. For this reason, 45 samples: 15
depressed, 15 anxious, and 15 normal individuals were chosen among the students of Estahban Payam Noor
university, that were the clients of the counseling clinic. In this study, after completing the Beck Anxiety
Inventory (BAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Autobiographical Memory Test and Means-ends
Problem- solving test were used. To analyze the data, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to
compare the overgeneralized and problem-solving in 3 groups of depressed, anxious, and normal individuals
and the Tukeys test was used for comparing two by two. The results revealed that overgeneralized in
autobiographical memory of depressed individuals is more than anxious and normal ones. Depressed
individuals used more inefficient problem solving solution in compare with distressed and healthy people.
And there is a meaningful relationship between the overgeneralized in autobiographical memory and
inefficient problem-solving in depressed people. Therefore, according to Williams models, depressed people
because of their negative mood and bias in processing information not only would have problem in retrieving
the autobiographical memories exclusively but also, this difficulty in retrieving affects their problem solving
thereby lead to the production of less effective solutions.
