This research examines the relationship between the spiritual revelations
of Jerusalem through analyzing the poetry of eight modern Palestinian
poets, and their relation to Jerusalem from three perspectives: religious
status, collective memory, the mother and love. The Israeli colonial
attempts to destroy “The Jewel of the Crown” – Jerusalem, to evacuate
its original people, to judaise it and to forge its history--- all of this made
it an obsession in the Palestinian poetic mind. Jerusalem inspired the
poets to compose their beautiful poetry as it represented the fortification
to whom they seek refuge at hard times. This place, Jerusalem, grants
those who return to it a renewable value and warmth despite the fact of
not possessing the place these days. The poet, thus, tries to get this place
back poetically and psychologically and associates himself with it. This
paper sheds light on the various dimensions of the poetic experience for
Jerusalem and shows the poets’ awareness of Jerusalem’s present and future
circumstances. In addition, their poetry points to their commitment in
expressing Jerusalem’s historical and cultural affairs which they recorded
in an aesthetic and creative language that exhibits some spotlights of its
history , as well as, the poets’ spiritual connection with it. This has been
done through observing the phenomenon and studying it objectively to
uncover its linguistic structure, its artistic devices, and its semanticity.
