The study explored the possibility of s developing a new approach to reading of specific religious texts. The main objective of the present study was to extract the principles of Imam Ali’s (AS) political approach in Letter no. 6 of Nahj-ul-Balagha, which was addressed to Mu'awiyah. Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis method was used at three levels: descriptive, interpretive, and explanatory. The findings drawn from the analysis revealed that at the level of description, the letter showed political inclinations of Imam Ali (AS) in confirming his authenticity and his political legitimacy for ruling the government. At interpretation level, by examining the context of situation and instances of intertextuality, the influential factors forming the text of the letter, such as: spatial and temporal conditions, as well as the impact of the political and social atmosphere in the society were notably shown. Finally, at explanatory level, by examining instances pertaining to ideology and hegemony in the expressions, the analysis showed that power and authority of Imam (AS) to express political goals could be obviously proved from this letter. As the concluding stage of the analysis, some of Imam’s (AS) political and social ideas, such as the criteria for electing the caliph and the degree of conformity of his own election with those criteria, which were derived from these three levels were extracted from the letter
