Introduction: Many individuals with visual impairment have a level of remaining vision that affect their independence and quality of life. In recent years, the use of visual augmentation tools has been considered. However, low diversity, relatively difficult access, and high cost of the technologies available on the market of these products make replacing them with more cost-effective tools inevitable. In this regard, in this study, experiments are designed for the effectiveness of remaining vision enhancement using a virtual reality headset and a smartphone. Method: For performing the experiments, proprietary graphics software is developed by applying Unity libraries under the Android operating system. According to the importance of object and motion detection in independent mobility, the experiments were designed to recognize the number, type, and motion of objects. The key point in designing experiments is the use of simple shapes and black and white images. Results: The results showed that 72%, 78%, and 83% of the participants were successful in recognizing the number, type, and motion of objects, respectively. Conclusion: The majority of individuals who participated in this study had a minimal perception of light and motion. Findings showed that simplifying objects and displaying white objects in a black background has a significant impact on increasing visual capabilities and enhancing the vision of blind people. Finally, due to the availability and low-cost virtual reality headsets and smartphones, the findings of this study draw a clear perspective on the rehabilitation of blind people.
