As messianism is one of the main aspects of religious beliefs in many religions, Mahdism and saviorism are perceived as the main subjects in Islam. In Islam, Messianism is mainly defined by the idea of “Mahdi.” In the Islamic context, the idea of “Mahdi” is used along with other words such as “Hadi, Qaem, Ghayba, Intezar, etc.” that have had gradual changes in different courses of time according to the intellectual context of the Islamic community. This study seeks to examine the development and changes of the idea of “Mahdi” and its relevance with the other ideas to respond to the question that what changes the idea of Mahdi had in the early Islamic eras. In this research, it will be determined that at first, the idea of “Mahdi” was used as a general and descriptive nickname, but it gradually developed from a messianic tradition, which emphasizes the order of this world, to an apocalyptic tradition and in this way the idea of “Mahdi” was linked to the apocalyptic traditions.
