رساله فایدون از این جهت اهمیت دارد که سه استدلال معروف افلاطون بر جاودانگی روح را بیان می‌کند که به ترتیب «استدلال از طریق تضاد»، «استدلال از طریق تذکر» و «استدلال از طریق بساطت» نامیده شده است. در استدلال از طریق تضاد، یک اصل کلی بیان می‌شود که به موجب هر ضدی از ضد خویش پدید می‌آید. در استدلال از طریق تذکر بیان می‌شود که به موجب گزاره «تعلم، تذکر است»، انسان می‌باید برخوردار از روح دارای حیات قبل از تولد باشد تا بتواند به درک معقولات نائل آید. استدلال از طریق بساطت بیان می‌کند که علت فناپذیری اشیاء، ترکب است و چون روح، بسیط است، فناپذیر نیست. در اشکال اول با بیان یک نظریه رقیب، نظریه ثنویت گرایی سقراطی به چالش کشیده می‌شود. بر اساس نظریه شبه پدیدارانگاری، روح، کیفیت بدن محسوب می‌شود و آن را هماهنگی بدن دانستهاند. پاسخ‌های سقراط بیشتر بیان لوازم فاسده نظریه هماهنگی است؛ عدم تبعیت روح از بدن در همه موارد، عدم تفاوت ارواح نیک و بد، دو لازمه فاسد در این اشکال اند. در اشکال دوم بیان می‌شود که روح ممکن است مرگ ناپذیر باشد ولی ممکن نیست فناپذیر نباشد. سقراط در پاسخ خویش به نظریه «مثل» متوسل شده و روح را بهره مند از صورت حیات می‌شمارد که علی الفرض جاودانه است و صورت مرگ را نمی‌پذیرد. گفتهاند در این پاسخ، بهره مندی همیشگی و جاودانه از صورت حیات، اثبات نشده است.
