ورود مدرنیته به ایران با چالش‌های متعددی همراه بوده‌است، به طوری‌که جامعه ایرانی در مواجهه با امر مدرن، دغدغه حفظ هویت بومی خود را داشته‌است. چالش‌های یک سده اخیر در ایران حاکی از آن است‌که جامعه ایرانی با مدرنیته مشکل نداشته بلکه با ایدئولوژی دگرساز غرب‌گرا که بر تفکر مدرن سایه انداخته بود، سرستیز داشت. با پیروزی انقلاب اسلامی، هم‌چنان تقابل سنت و مدرنیته که میراثی تاریخی محسوب می‌شد، خودنمایی می‌کرد. هریک از دولتمردان پس از انقلاب به دلیل اقتضائات ناشی از انقلاب با ایدئولوژی غرب‌گرا از در خصومت درآمدند اما با مدرنیته و ماشین فاوستی توسعه مدرن نه تنها هیچ مشکلی نداشته بلکه به عنوان پیشرانان امر مدرن نقش‌آفرینی کرده‌اند. نوشتار پیش‌رو درصدد است تا پرچمداری دولت‌های ایران پسا انقلاب در پیشبرد امر توسعه مدرن را به رغم تعارضات ایدئولوژیکی با ایدئولوژی غرب‌گرا که خود را به صورت تخاصم با غرب نمایان ساخته بود، به نمایش بگذارد. این نوشتار هم‌چنین در راستای اثبات مدعای بالا به شیوه توصیفی و تحلیلی، از مدل نظری تلفیقی فاوست گوته، امرنمادین لکان و جهان زیست هابرماس بهره‌گرفته است.
