جامعهشناسی پژوهش ادبی، بر اساس اثر اولیه در تولید فرهنگ، در زیباییشناسی پذیرش1 و سرمایة فرهنگی در خلال چند سال گذشته بر ساختار معنی2 خوانندگان و بر شبکههای درون نظامهای ادبی تمرکز کرده است. جهتهای جدید شامل موارد زیر هستند: مطالعة روابط بینادبیات و هویتهای گروهی؛ ارتباط دادن تحلیلهای نهادی و خواننده ـ پاسخ 3؛ معرفی مجدد نقش نیت نویسنده؛ و ایجاد یک درک روشنتر از اینکه چگونه ادبیات به دیگر رسانهها شبیه است و چگونه شبیه نیست.
