The promotion of science refers to any activity that publicizes
science, develops scientific thinking, or create an interest among
people or groups of people in science or scientific activities. The
dissemination of scientific knowledge at the community level is
one of the main goals of scientific publications. As long as such
publications are not prevalent in society, audiences cannot benefit
from them. Therefore, the first things that come to mind when one
hears the term “science promotion” are understanding knowledge
and its distribution and raising an appropriate awareness among
different communities in the society. Libraries, whose main
functions are to collect, organize and disseminate knowledge,
are always trying to help raise awareness and understanding in
society. Libraries in general and public libraries in particular have
an especially important role in the use of generated knowledge
by society. In essence, they can be called institutions for science
promotion. The provision of information sources in a scholarly
way for professionals, and in a somewhat simpler way for the
general public, is an essential service of today’s libraries. Perhaps
science promotion is nothing more than supplying information
resources based on audiences’ needs and understanding. In this
paper, the following issues are discussed: the concept of science
promotion, the necessity of promoting science in the present era,
the role of public libraries in science promotion, approaches that
can be adopted by public libraries to promote science, the role of
librarians in promoting science, etc.
