In addition to describing his own positions about sublime happiness
(al-saÝÁdat al-quÒwÁ), Ibn Miskawayh gives an account of the views of the
earlier philosophers and explores the views of Pythagoras, Socrates, Plato
and Aristotle. To explain the views of Ibn Miskawayh about sublime
happiness, his account can be divided into two negative and positive
sections: according to his negative account, the attainment of sublime
happiness is not enjoyment of physical pleasures. As in his negative
explanation, sublime happiness would not lie in the attainment of
happiness. And in the positive explanation there are six criteria
(attainment of horizons of angels, receiving wisdom from inhabitants of
the Highest Chiefs (al-malaÞ al-aÝlÁ), loving movement towards God,
achieving ultimate perfection in the two theoretical and practical
dimensions, the attainment of unlimited blessings of paradise and
seeking to be nearer to God). The author argues that these criteria are
not mutually exclusive, rather they can be brought together. Although
some of these criteria are vulnerable to criticism, overall they are
indicative of Ibn Miskawayh’s strong influence by the sacred religion of
Islam.
