Lead poisoning is one of the adverse effects of urbanization and wide use of gasoline-powered automobiles. Tehran, being surrounded on three sides by mountains, has no continous flow of air. Therefore the existence of many air-polluting industries, and the dense traffic of gas-powered vehicles, has caused Tehran to be one of the most polluted cities in the world. In this study, blood lead levels were measured in people living in different geographical districts of Tehran using atomic absorption flame spectroscopy. Results showed that: 1) Inhabitants of different districts of Tehran have elevated blood lead levels. The highest levels are seen in people living in Southern and Central Tehran. 2) Lead levels are higher in males than in females. 3) Smokers have higher levels of lead than those who do not smoke. 4) Those who drink more liquids (such as tea) have lower levels of lead in their blood. 5) Patients with lead levels above 0.2 mg/l complain of the symptoms of chronic lead intoxication, such as headaches, weakness, peripheral pain and sleep disorders. 6) Based on fine measurements of blood lead and delta-aminolevulinic acid, use of oral antidotes to chelate lead is recommended to prevent secondary complications in susceptible groups such as children, the elderly, and pregnant and lactating women. 7) Implementation of specific traffic policies, converting vehicles to use natural gas, and limiting the use of leaded gasoline, may decrease the air pollution caused by lead and alleviate its complications.
