Rebound-therapy as a new method of exercise that can mechanically
stimulate the neuromuscular system has recently attracted researchers and
rchabilitators’ attention. Considering the relationship between the
functionality of the neuromuscular system and balance as an inseparable part
of daily as well as sport activities, this study aimed to investigate the effect
of rebound-therapy exercises on the dynamic balance of young female
athletes. 40 female athletes (age: M=22.9, S.D= 2.03; weight: M=64.97 kg,
S.D= 4.21; height: M=170.25 cm, S.D= 6.05; body mass index: M=22.6,
S.D= 2.1) voluntarily participated in this study. They were randomly
assigned to either the control group (10 basketball players and 10 taekwondo
practitioners) or the experimental group (10 basketball players and 10
taekwondo practitioners). Prior to the application of the exercise program,
Le. rebound-therapy, the dynamic balance of the subjects was measured
using Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT). The experimental group
performed rebound-therapy exercises including health, aerobic, power, and
resistance bounces for 8 weeks, 5 days per week, and 30 minutes per day.
After completing the 8 week program, both the control and experimental
groups’ excursion balance was tested using the same test, SEBT.
Independent samples T-test was run to analyze the collected data. The results
of the study showed that whereas no difference was found between the pre-test
and post-test of the control group, rebound-therapy exercises showed a
significant impact on the two experimental groups concerning five directions
(medial, antero-medial, posterior, posterior-medial, and posterior-lateral) of
SEBT. However, the two groups were not significantly different in three
directions (anterior, anterior-lateral, and lateral). It can be concluded that
rebound-therapy exercises can be generally recommended to improve
balance level, although the level of improvement in dynamic balance is
predicted to be higher in the medial, antero-medial, posterior, posterior-
medial, and posterior-lateral directions.
