This study investigates the formal changes and developments of the architecture of the Iranian markets from the
Qajar Dynasty up to the Contemporary Era in order to determine the changes in form of these markets during the
Qajar Dynasty, the Pahlavi (I & II) Dynasty, and the Contemporary Era, what major differences have occurred in
the definition and shape of the markets from the Qajar Dynasty up to now, and why the past traditional markets
have changed into the business centers in today's form and shape. The markets which had been located in a large
part of cities as the beating heart of the cities and which used to be considered not only as centers for buying and
selling goods, but also as centers from which the social and political movements arose, have nowadays changed
into multi-floor business centers scattered across cities. These changes can be attributed to the increasing
development of urbanization and extraordinarily increased price of land and space. Another important reason for
the changes in form of the markets during these four periods is the considerably decreased importance of
circulation and the Mass and Space System from the traditional markets up to the business centers of the Pahlavi
period and the Contemporary Era.
