Aims: This manuscript is to theorize “designerly” approach to “energy efficiency” and building physics based on “high-performance architecture theory” in order to pave the way for successful architectural education and learning to enhance level of “energy efficiency” in future construction.
Methods: The research distributes the self-reported questionnaires among 20 professors (the chairs of master design studios) and 85 recently graduated students (architectural technology and low-energy architecture) in seven top universities of Iran, in order to evaluate quality of related building physics courses, as well as the level of practicality.
Findings: The results indicate that current overloaded data-intensified strategies were not successful enough in preparation the graduated students for real projects, moreover university professors emphasize on unsuccessful results of data-intensive education. The design studios have nothing to do with theoretical textbooks in building physics departments, because find them “non-practical”.
Conclusion: High-performance architecture theory as a ground-breaking framework for “future architecture” and “architecture of future”, roots in recognizing recently developed phenomena in architectural design and practice such as “big data”, “deep learning”, hybrid algorithmic thinking procedures, IoT, BIM, artificial intelligence, computational fabrication and material-based computation. High-performance architecture promotes team-work rather than being a pertinacious super-architect, being sci-tech rather than sentimental formalist, listing to feed-backs back instead of try to feed-forward, and adoption of integrated multi-objective optimization. All the departments would better synchronize their courses, and plan to shift from data-intensive courses to designerly ones. The research emphasize on necessity of paradigm shift in architectural education and learning.
