Abstract Background and Aim: Studies show that disturbances in substrate metabolism occur as a result of obesity probably increases with age. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to Comparison of substrate metabolism and energy expenditure in young and middle-aged obese women during running on a treadmill. Materials and Methods: 10 obese women aged 20 to 25 years and 10 obese women aged 40 to 45 years volunteered in the research project. The exercise plan was to run on treadmill with an intensity of 75% of maximum heart rate for 30 minutes. The respiratory gases of the subjects were measured an gas analyzer system for 30 minutes in the baseline and 30 minutes during activity in order to measure the oxidation of fat and carbohydrates and energy expenditure of the subjects. Data were analyzed using multivariate variance analysis test (α = 0.05). Results: The results showed that energy expenditure, carbohydrate and fat oxidation in the baseline were not significantly different between the two groups. But these indicators were significantly lower in middle aged obese women than in young obese women. Conclusion: According to the results of the present study probably in middle aged obese women, substrate metabolism and energy expenditure are lower and these have to more time doing a moderate activity than young obese women to increase their energy expenditure and reduce their body weight.
