Introduction: The study of interaction and contact of phonological and phonetic systems of first and second/ foreign languages has attracted the attention of many researchers in second/ foreign language learning and bilingualism. In general, classic, adaptive and perceptual assimilation models have been introduced in the field of relationship and phonetic contact of first and second languages. In the classic approach, first languages affect second languages while in the adaptive model second languages affect first ones. Contrary to these two models, in the perceptual model, two systems of languages affect each other. As there is no agreement on the relationship of languages and the result of their contacts on phonetic intuition of speakers, in this research the contact of Balochi (the first) and Persian (the second) has been studied concerning phonetic (phonological) system and voice onset time (VOT) to test the introduced models and to identify the influence and attrition direction of two language systems. In other words, the objective of this case-control study is to investigate the phonetic attrition of the Lashari Balochi language and the changes that Persian language acquisition has on increasing or decreasing of voiceless stop consonants' VOT in the Lashari Balochi variety. Moreover, the effect of Balochi on Kermani Persian voiceless stop consonants has been considered to investigate the phonetic attrition of adult Balochi- Persian bilinguals concerning the VOT of [p], [t] and [k] consonants.Method: The present case-control study investigates the VOT of voiceless stop consonants in production of adult speakers through the repetition task of disyllabic nouns. In this regard, the language behavior of 12 participants who participated in this study as one experimental and two control groups was analyzed. Each group of participants consisted of four subjects (two men and two women). The stimuli included 40 frequent disyllabic nouns of Persian and Balochi. All Balochi and Persian words included the cvcvc syllabic pattern. All stop consonants had the same context. They were at the beginning of words and the low vowel /ɒ/ was located immediately after them. The subjects were asked to repeat the nouns to measure the VOT of stop consonants through Praat.Findings: The data analysis showed that the VOT of voiceless stop consonants [p], [t] and [k] in Persian speakers was more than Balochi speakers. The VOT comparisons of Balochi [p], [t] and [k] in monolingual Balochi and Persian- Baochi bilinguals (the effect of the second language on first) showed that the VOT mean of these phones in bilinguals was more than monolinguals confirming the significant difference between these two groups in the production of these consonants. The VOT mean of [p], [t] and [k] in Persian speakers was more than Balochi- Persian bilinguals (the effect of the first language on second) confirming the significant difference of VOT in these two groups. Results and Conclusion: The same patterns of VOT mean in different groups indicated the relationship between VOT of voiceless stop consonants and their place of articulation. Moreover, Persian and Balochi have a reciprocal relationship concerning the phonetic attrition of voiceless stop consonants. Persian causes the phonetic attrition of Balochi in advanced adult Balochi- Persian bilingual speakers living in Balochi context, makes the VOT of Balochi consonants close to the VOT of Persian consonants and triggers them to be converged. Moreover, Balochi decreases the VOT of Persian consonants and makes interference and attrition in Persian.
