e rule of the Umayyads ocially began aer the conclusion of the peace treaty of Imam Hassan
(as) with Mu›awiyah in 41 AH. is government, in the name of caliphate and the establishment
of kingship and monarchy, was able to rule over the Muslims for more than 90 years. e present
article uses a descriptive-analytical method based on historical studies to emphasize the importance
of the issue of legitimacy and its role in the survival of political systems, to show how the Umayyads
made their rule «legitimate» to Muslims? Hence, it is necessary to reflect on the doctrinal, social, and
psychological roots of the ideas of the first-century Muslims who embraced the Umayyads. e findings
indicate that the Umayyads made many eorts to gain legitimacy. erefore, by proposing principles
such as attribution to the Quraysh, Uthman›s bloodlust, representation of Umar and Uthman, and
Arab nervousness, they tried to convince the majority of the society to accept their caliphate; But
because their caliphate, despite all the eorts they made to gain legitimacy, was not based on religious
teachings, they were never able to gain legitimacy for themselves.
