Comparative study which has beneficial results in improving interpretation is one of the methodsof research in religious sciences such as the interpretation of holy Qur’an. Some believethat comparative studies, including comparative interpretation in the contemporary period, are rooted in Western studies, but studies show that comparative method has a very importantposition in the studies done by Muslim scholars. Based on the available evidence and usingdescriptive method, the present paper refers to the roots of comparative studies among Muslimscholars and tries to study and analyze the background of comparative interpretation and itsdevelopments in the contemporary period. The results of this study show that the first workson comparative studies written at the same time as comparative studies in the field of interpretation, titled “Al-Mawazna” and “Al-Wasata”, were mainly rooted in the study of Arabicliterature. The comparative approach has somehow existed in the famous commentariesof the two main Islamic sects, but in the contemporary period, especially in the Shiite field, the comparative approach has changed and expanded a lot. Also, the paper aims to prove thatcomparative interpretation has been influenced by the efforts of Muslim scholars in the thirdand fourth centuries, rather than by studies of comparative literature in the West. The importantpoint is that comparative interpretation is always subject to deviating to fanatical religiousinterpretation; therefore, the paper emphasizes the necessity to explain the limits of religiousinterpretation and its distinction from comparative interpretation.
