Identifying the connection between different sectors of the economy is central to policy making and portfolio management and this is specifically important for a developing country like Iran. In this paper, we use high-frequency Iranian stock market sector returns data (4 clusters including 12 sectors that constitute more than 70% of the stock market capitalization) from 10/11/2009 to 10/04/2022 and estimate the static and dynamic total connectedness indices using the vector autoregressive model and DY connectedness index. The findings indicate that first, 56% of forecast error variance can be attributed to cross-sectoral innovations within our network, so we deduce that there is indeed strong co-movement across the different sectors. Second, the connectedness between sectoral performances varies significantly across time. The strongest spillovers can be seen in recent years when the stock market experienced incredible ups and downs. The strengthening spillovers led to touching the figure of 85% in the total connectedness index at the beginning of 2022. Third, the basic metal industry and investment sector have played as permanent transmitters of shocks; by contrast, sectors like sugar and ceramic were the recipient of volatilities. This finding confirms the existence of the lead-lag effect in the Iranian stock market. Fourth, the presence of strong pairwise spillovers, especially between “BaseMetal and MetalOres” and “Food-Sugar” indicate that shocks be transferred from downstream to upstream industries in each clusters.
