Nefrin-e-Zamin (The Curse of the Land) is a novel by Jalal Al-e-Ahmad. A newcomer in the novel, the teacher, narrates his presence in a nameless village. The novel displays the transition from tradition to modernity. It takes place during the new governmental policies about land ownership. The present article reads the novel from the perspective of Henry Lefebvre. Lefebvre challenges the acclaimed static features of space and introduces it as vibrant and multi-layered. From this stance, the village is an active and dynamic entity. The teacher is the agent who shows this dynamicity. Lefebvre's dialectical triad, perceived, conceived and lived experiences in the village - represented in spatial practice, representations of space, and representational spaces - are elucidated in this study. Teacher's visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, and tactile perception of village are fully studied. The correspondence or discrepancy of the teacher's mental conception and his lived experience in the village come next in this paper. The fragmentation of the homogeneous space of the village and the consequence hierarchization are also investigated. Finally the right to the city and its two subcategories, the right to participation, and the right to appropriation are scrutinized in the villagers and three strangers: the teacher, the procurator, and the vagabond artist. From Lefebvre's lens, the village is not a neutral and passive receiver, rather a dynamic and multi-faceted entity which is produced over and over in the novel.
