The image of woman in written and oral Arabic literature was
stereotyped as a subject for men, and a source of their poetic inspiration.
Critical study of women's poetry is quite rare, especially if it is in a
dialect that stands as a communication barrier for many learners and
recipients .
The polemics of this research and its questions revolve around the
issue of a female loving another female. The study is divided into several
sections that reveal visions and tools in the poetry of Awsha Bint Khalifa
in the structure of the poem’s beginning, the visual form in the passion of
the female, and eventually the clarity of the identification with the
beloved as a subjective experience.
The paper concludes that Awsha’s love poetry resembles the
language of spiritual dialogue and mystical consciousness more than any
other form of poetic diction and theme. The source of her poetry is
appreciation of beauty and its spiritual impact that shakes the self with
the passion of love. The lover, indeed, is more likely to dissolve into the
beloved. The poet, definitely, could not exclude woman as the main
theme, being the object of deep attraction, which triggers vital motives in
the self that responds directly to pleasure. However, she - at the same
time - bears the pride of the Arab woman who only sees dignity in love,
not humiliation.
The poet was able to break rigid restrictions on the concept of love
since the pre-Islamic era until the present time. She was even able to
break stronger and fiercer constraints related to her tribal environment,
by manipulating her intellectual awareness and compassion while
addressing the theme of love in her poetry. It was a hard time for her
indeed, because it is easier to change societies than to change mentalities,
which are enforced by means of social control (people’s talk, halal and
haram). Therefore, in conservative societies, it is quite difficult to change
people's dogmas and their way of thinking.
The poet's awareness of the "poetic example" became a vivid
symbol of female consciousness of life in a difficult and restrictive
traditional culture.
