For example, despitehavingrichcivilizationalcontent, whichhasgreatly affectedthe modern Western civilization, the Indian civilizationhas neverenjoyed a consolidated political and social structure and has always tried to absorb elements of invading cultures instead of resisting them.
Intellectuals who have played their role under any political structure from that devised by Reza Shah up to the Islamic Republic of Iran, tried to find a new mechanism to both protect the Iranian identity, and create a new structure.
Modernist intellectuals who lived from the Constitutional Revolution up to the time of Reza Shah generally tried to fully comply with the West and advocated Westernization oflran.
They followed two lines of thought at the same time; on the one hand, they criticized modernist Iranian intellectuals and chided them for negating all customary traditions, and on the other hand, they adopted Occidentology as their main approach.
Despite providing new solutions, there are two considerations about this group: (1) They tried to know the East and Islamic identity in the face of the West through Western methods because if they were not aware of Western and scientific methods, they could not have presented their viewpoints in the manner they did; (2) all the ups and downs will take us back to the starting point.
Extensive studies on the Islamic and Iranian culture and efforts to know the West through translating important Western works were along the same lines.
Conclusion Efforts made by Iranian intellectuals to shed more light on national identity at a time of modernism have not only been laudable, but also complementary yielding deductible results.
