The New Afghanistan: Opportunities and Challenges Ahead On 28 May 2006, the Centerfor Scientific Research and Middle East Strategic Studies hosted his Excellency Dr. Rangin Dadar Spanta, the Foreign Minister ofAfghanistan.
He identified three main preferences in Afghanistan s foreign policy: 1) the promotion offriendly relations with the neighbors; 2) the improvement ofrelations with the Islamic countries; 3) the long• term cooperation with the U.
Given the challenges before Afghanistan,· Dr. Spanta discussed the main challenges which are international and common: Terrorism, drug trafficking, lack ofprogress and poverty.
For example, the Islamic republie of Iran propounded the establishment of a strong central government in Afghanistan.
For that matter, the United States of America, EU, Islamic countries and many other countries acknowledged that a strong central government must exist in Afghanistan.
Such international cooperation and consensus of opinion over Afghanistan among members of international community on this issue contributed to the functions of the central government.
Also, Afghanistan contributes to the international community and plays a significant role in the region.
The basic question for my country is how we draw up our foreign relations as an Islamic country in this part of the world until we have both stability and democratic system of government.
We all contribute to fight against poverty, drugs and international terrorism in Afghanistan.
This issue becomes more dangerous when little by little the drug traffickers' mafia within Afghanistan and international terrorism are linked.
Afghanistan intends to cooperate with its neighbors and other countries of the region.
