خلاصه ماشینی:
"آیا مراجعه خوانندگان و تماشاگران به بخشهای جدید داستانهای ژانری متداول و استفاده دوباره از آنها امری غیرمعقول است؟ به نظر میرسد این سؤال را بتوان به طور یکسان برای چهار دسته به کار برد:1-آنها که ترجیح میدهند دائما از متون مستقل و عموما مشابه استفاده کنند(به عنوان مثال، طرفداران فیلمهای ترسناک یا حادثهای)؛ 2-آنها که ترجیح میدهند از متون سریالی استفاده کنند که در آن هذ بخش،ساختاری کمابیش مستقل دارد یا سریالهای تلویزیونی که به صورت واحدهای داستانی کمابیش مستقل نمایش داده میشوند؛3-آنها که متون ژانری نظیر سریالهای آبکی و بازاری را ترجیح میدهند که در آنها محورهای داستان در درازمدت بسط مییابند و با اشخاص دیگر پیوند میخورند و 4-آنها که آمیزه و ترکیبی از گروههای فوق هستند(و البته بدون شک اکثریت را تشکیل میدهند).
اگر به پیروی از ریکور،فرای، بارت و بروکس بر محوریت پیرنگ در فرایند پیگیری و فهم داستانها تأکید کنیم و به خصوص اگر این ایده را بپذیریم که همانند خوانندگان و بینندگان دائما درگیر عمل طبقهبندی،تلفیق و تنظیم عناصر خاص پیرنگ با هدف استخراج معنایی از داستان بهطور کلی هستیم،در این صورت میتوانیم مشاهده کنیم که تفسیر و فهم پیرنگ یا جستوجوی آن،در مورد سینما مهارتی است که میتوانیم آن را در مورد متون ژانری و نیز غیرژانری تعمیم دهیم و اعمال کنیم.
سؤال اصلی کرول ناظر به پارادوکس داستان junk ،است که من پیشتر در مقدمه به آن اشاره کردم:نظر به این که اغلب استفادهکنندگان داستانهای junk پیشتر کاملا با قالب این ژانرها آشنا هستند و در نتیجه حتی پیش از خواندن،تماشا کردن یا شنیدن هر نمونه خاص از ژانر احساس خوبی دارند،آیا عقلانی است از داستانهایی استفاده کنیم که پیشتر نتیجه آنها را میدانیم؟ راهکار و راهحل کرول برای پارادوکس داستان junk عبارت است از معنا کردن و فهم این رفتار."
