In the Qur’anic view, in addition to the guiding status of the prophets in the general sense ofguidance, Imamate is associated with a special status based on the specific divine guidance intwo revealed and creational or outward and inward aspects. Accordingly, in line with the lexicalmeaning, Imam in the Qur’an means leader and the source of guidance, whose divine lightprovides guidance and leadership of people on the straight path and the evolutionary stages of areligious community. Naturally, Imam’s main mission is different from that of the prophet andmessenger, which is considered in the foundational and elementary stage of religion. AmongMuslim scholars, AllamehTabatabai, by emphasizing the distinction between the status ofImamate and the status of prophethood in the Qur’an, and in search of the main componentof Imamate and its difference from prophethood, has used the concept of “guidance aright”which is specified in two verses of the Qur’an. He has interpreted this concept as creationalesoteric guidance. Although this interpretation is important in terms of emphasizing an importantand distinct dimension in the Qur’anic Imamate, it is accompanied by some controversyin the light of the evidence he provides. This paper offers a comprehensive interpretationof guidance aright in the status of Imamate in the Qur’an that can be defended by preservingAllameh’sQur’anic and epistemological concerns.
