Abstract:
This article seeks to study the ratio of the sense of localism to
the sense of nationalism among Iranian Azerbaijanis living in Tabriz.
The researchers utilized survey method of research to obtain the
relevant data through questionnaires. 224 samples were selected
through cluster random sampling from a population of literate
residents of Tabriz. The analysis of results indicated that the ratio of
nationalism in Tabriz is remarkably higher than localism. Test of
alternative Hypotheses indicated that despite low rate of localism
among the residents, factors such as cross-border ethnic ties and
local language concerns might give rise to localism, whereas Shiism,
religious as well as national holidays and celebrations might increase
the level of nationalism. The author concludes that despite the
existence of some active ethnic movements, they are not much
welcomed by the people since the convergent factors are superior to
the divergent factors in the region.
