Abstract:
Aim: This study was performed with the aim of investigating
the roles of 'parenting style' and 'parenting stress' in predicting
'behavior problems' in children aged 2-6 years old. Method:
It was a descriptive correlational study: 355 children (206
boys, 149 girls) were selected through a cluster random
sampling. The population of the study was children enrolled
in day nurseries in Qom city (Iran). The Children's mothers
were asked to complete Achenbach's Child Behavior
Checklist (CBCL), Baumrind's Parental Styles Scale (PSS),
and Abdin's Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF).
Resulths: Analyzing the data using correlation coefficients
and stepwise regression analyses indicated that the
'authoritarian' parenting style and the components of mothers'
parenting stress are positively and significantly related to the
children's externalizing behavior problems. In addition,
positive relationships of the children's internalizing behavior
problems to 'permissive' parenting style, 'authoritarian'
parenting style, and the components of mothers' parenting
stress, were shown to be statistically significant. Also, there
was a significant negative relationship between 'authoritative'
parenting style and internalizing behavior problems. Results
of stepwise multiple regression analyses indicated that
characteristics of 'difficult child' (a domain of PSI-SF) and
'authoritarian' parenting style, together, are good predictors of
the children's externalizing behavior problems. Furthermore,
characteristics of 'difficult child' and 'parental distress' (two
domains of PSI-SF) together with 'authoritarian' parenting
style, are among the best predictors of the children's
internalizing behavior problems.Conclusion: These findings
reveal the importance of the roles of parenting styles and
parenting stress domains in the development of the children's
behavior problems. So, it seems necessary to consider these
variables in designing and developing education and
prevention programs in order to reduce behavioral problems
in children.
