Abstract:
Damavand city, located in the east of Tehran province, is experiencing changes
in various aspects due to its special characteristics influenced by different factors.
The main purpose of this paper is to explore land use and land cover changes
in Damavand during 2002-2018. In this paper, we have attempted to take a
step forward by simultaneously using the remote sensing system and analyzing
satellite images recorded by ETM and OLI sensors towards its primary goal
of discovering land use and land cover changes in Damavand during the years
2002-2018. For this purpose, various preprocessing, processing and monitoring
techniques have been employed. The overall analysis is based on the conversion
of ideas into maps and extraction tables. Classification of the images was carried
out in the maximum likelihood by validating the training points and applying the
necessary preprocessing. Land use and land cover maps were prepared in 2002
and 2018 with an overall accuracy of 97.5 and 98.004%, respectively.
The results show a 109% increase in land use class. There was also a decrease of
14.34% and 22.44% in the barren land and vegetation class, respectively. 4.73%
of the Barren land and 1.31% of the vegetation class have been converted to the
built-up class. Changes in land use and land cover are particularly significant in
the southwest of the city. Recent transformations indicate the need for effective
planning to prevent major urban damage.
