The commercial movement in Iraq witnessed noticeable
prosperity during the first Abbasid era, particularly via the
Arab Gulf. Basrah markets witnessed active stratum of
workers in this field, especially those dealers who belong
to the public class of society. But later on some of those
dealers used to be regarded as a special class due to their
growing wealth. They used to be divided into three classes:
the wholesalers, the suppliers and the mobile dealers or
the bagmen. On the other hand, sellers were classified
into: stable sellers who own shops in the different markets
and hawkers or peddlers. This group of sellers and those
connected with them, suppliers and manufacturers, usually
identified by the terms like ‘the professionals’ or ‘craftsmen’
in addition to another important market profession known
as ‘the brokers’
