Abstract:
The chemical attack of Halabja is one of important events of the Iran-Iraq War which is considered as a human
tragedy and it is compared to the atomic bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during
the World War II. The attack against Halabja area and the villages therein was launched by the Saddam regime
in reaction to the cooperation of Iraqi Kurdish opposition groups with the Islamic Republic warriors. During this
attack, thousands of the regional Kurdish inhabitants were killed or injured and the other ten thousands of them
became homeless. The Halabja tragedy was later set at the daily world news headlines for a long time and affected
the public opinions sorely. The Islamic Republic succeeded to create an extensive and effective propaganda
atmosphere against the Iraqi regime which led to a global condemnation of this regime in the political circles,
mass media and public opinions; an atmosphere in which the political pressures on Iran to accept the Resolution
598 of the UN Security Council was reduced as well. This article studies the tragedy and the problems thereafter
whose affects are remained after 25 years.
