Abstract:
This study delved into the effect of cash flow volatility on the capital structure decisions and the debt ratio of the admitted companies to the Tehran stock exchange. To achieve this objective, we collected and presented information attributed to eighty companies within the span of 1390-1397. This comprises our statistical sample with a frequency of six months, which would be 1280 in total. Consequently, the hypotheses were checked. To test the hypotheses, we followed Panel Data method running Eviews 10. The obtained empirical evidence from testing the first hypothesis revealed that the operating cash flow risk has a significant and positive effect on the sample companies’ debt ratio. Based on the statistical findings, it seems that this effect is not substantial, which by itself, entails that the majority of managers does not consider the effect of cash flow volatility as a pivotal player in their decisions regarding the capital structure. Additionally, the findings obtained from testing the second hypothesis highlight that this impact is relatively more considerable in top and bottom quantiles. In companies with lower or higher operative cash flow, the difference due to cash flow volatility on debt ratio is also is more marked.
