Syntax is one of the most important
sciences in the language of Arabic since it
helps with recognizing the correctness or
weakness of Arabic sentences, and also
helps with better recognition of affairs
related to expressions in terms of
composition.
One of the most obvious important
syntactic topics which has challenged the
thoughts of syntactical scientists is the issue
of connected and disconnected Amwhich is
considered as a very important issue since
there are multiple signs in the holy Quran
and prophets’ hadiths the comprehension of
which relies on the manner of interpretation
of disconnected Am by the syntactical
scientists. The general definition of Am and
the description on its varieties declares that
there are two types of Om: connected and
disconnected. In the case of connected Om,
we will have a settlement tittle and so the
Am and its referred words are either verbs,
nouns or vice versa. On the other hand, by
disconnected Am it is referred to the one
that lacks these features and is always
brought to refer to denial. However
Mohammad Ali Ibn Mohammad Isfahani
has further expanded this topic and pointed
to this important point: there are four types
of Am namely as connected, disconnected,
redundant and explanatory; and for each
one he has mentioned an instance; since
none of the syntactical scientists except for
Isfahani have elaborated on this issue in
their books, the author of the present article
found it necessary to elaborate on this topic.
