Abstract:
Cities have long been shaped by the culture of a nation and reflect identity. The modern image of cities results from cultural eclecticism; however, less attention has been paid to Islamic identity. Meaning is one of the most important aspects of the city's identity, and its emptiness or incompatibility with cultural values and consequently the undesirable urban identity is one of the concerns of today's cities. Attention to reality and meaning can play a role as an essential identifying factor in the city. In this regard, this study evaluates the appearance of old and contemporary neighborhoods of Tabriz and answers the question of which buildings are a landmark from the perspective of people's perception in the mentioned neighborhoods and what are the differences from the standpoint of Islamic semantics and whether they correspond to the Islamic identity. The research method is descriptive-analytical. In the first stage in the context of library studies, it reviews the sources and then uses the case study method and questionnaire, and field analysis to identify and examine landmarks based on the indicators of Islamic semantics. The results indicate that the features of traditional neighborhoods have a religious function and the perceptual meaning is consistent with the characteristics of Islamic semantics. However, in contemporary neighborhoods, buildings are known as a landmark with a material function, and the perceptual meaning in this building is far from Islamic principles and values. As a result, the lack of attention to Islamic values has caused the appearance of contemporary neighborhoods to be significantly different from Islamic identity.
