The splendor, grandeur and beauty of Islamic architecture in Iran and even pre-Islamic architecture depends more than anything on its decoration and arrangement, and in each period of the Islamic period of Iran, a variety of arts have been used to decorate architectural spaces. Decorative elements express the architectural and decorative features of that period. One of the buildings that used the most important decorative elements in the Islamic period after mosques is the tomb architecture. In this research, the tomb of Hesam Dowlah is introduced in the old part of Birjand. This building belongs to the Qajar period and is one of the non-religious tomb buildings. Due to the ownership of the building, this work has not been introduced yet and the purpose of this article is to introduce the architecture of the tomb of Hesam Dowlah, the buried character and the classification of the decorations used in this building. In this regard, the present study seeks a logical answer to the following questions: what is the architecture of the tomb of Hesam Dowlah? what are the decorative arrays used in the tomb of Hesam Dowlah? what kind of designs are used in the decoration of this building? The tomb of Hesam Dowlah was built inside a garden., Today, due to its location in the urban context, only a part of the garden remains, and the constructions that have taken place around the main structure of the building in recent decades, have destroyed the originality of the work, and except the entrance porch of the building, its other three sides are surrounded by new structures. In general, this tomb is comparable to contemporary buildings in terms of plan and architectural features, and the difference lies in its decorations. Among the decorations used in the tomb is the art of mirror work. The art of mirror work in the Qajar period is mostly used in government buildings and religious tombs. In addition to mirror work, the art of bedding and brickwork has been used in this building, and plant, geometric, animal and calligraphic motifs are among the decorative motifs used in this tomb. The designs used in the building are comparable to contemporary buildings in Birjand, including Rahimabad Garden and Akbariyeh Garden. The present study is a descriptive and analytical research with a historical and cultural approach and its findings have been collected through library and field studies.
