Abstract:
Contemporary studies on the history of moral thought in the Islamic world have focused more on the knowledge of philosophical moral thought from the 2nd century AH onwards, and less attention has been paid to the historical study, typologizing and classifying the ideas not included in the philosophical tradition of the Islamic world. Often the origins of the moral ideas of Muslim scholars reflected in the philosophical tradition are sought somewhere outside the Islamic world. A critical look at this approach requires that we present evidence in favor of the continuation of moral theories in the Islamic world from the oldest period, i.e. the age of the Companions, and answer the question of what theoretical basis can be used to recognize the ancient moral ideas of Muslims in the age of the Companions. These ideas remained unknown upto now; because they were presented in forms different from the philosophical system of ethics. To recognize such schools, it is necessary to show the rationality and significance of the pursuing moral thought in the age of the Companions. We must also answer the question of how the Companions may, despite their participation in the discipleship of the Prophet Muhammad, become the promoters of different opinions and schools. Similarly, we need to explain how resources are collected and data analysis strategies appropriate to this purpose. The purpose of the present study is to try to achieve these goals and to create a theoretical basis for analyzing the history of moral thought.
