Abstract:
Culture of any social group is manifested through language of the group. In French literature, in order to provide a precise representation of the lower class of society during the Second Empire, Emile Zola wrote the L'Assommoir novel. This work is the first novel in which the workers of Paris speak via their slang language. But the important thing here is the perception of the dominant culture of the worker's society through the language of this community. This requires analyzing the multiple language phrases of the novel's characters in situations with different tones. In this study, we attempt to examine the relationship between the culture and the slang language of the working class based on the concept of Cultuling (language + culture). Each Cultuling consists of a whole linguistic expressions, which represents the total of the Cultuling, Metacultuling, or dominant culture of a community. To this end, we will explore the obvious Cultuling in this novel as explicit, defamatory, deterministic, and childish Cultuling. This research tries to answer the question whether the Cultulings extracted from the novel can be a reflection of the Metacultuling of this human social group or not?
