Abstract:
Iranian traditional music, which we know today as Dastgah (instrumental) music, came to serve Islamic rites and rituals after the arrival of Islam in Iran and the promotion of the Shia religion. As a result of this development, musical tones for performing religious rites appeared under the name of religious music in the form of prayers, rawzah (narrative accounts of Imam Hussein’s martyrdom) and monody etc. Accordingly, we witness an undeniable connection and cohesion between religious music and Iranian traditional music during the history of Shiism in Iran, Safavid and Qajar eras in particular; because part of our Dastgah music has its roots in past religious music and it shows intself in a form of reglious music due to prohibitions and restrictions.
Because the life of Shia religious music has been formed in the context of instrumental music and Radif (Row), it is necessary to know the life and musical characteristics of various forms that are common in this type of music. This would be necessary for answering questions about tones and melodies in instrumental Radifs of religious music of Shias of Iran and also for answering questions about impacts and changes of religious music on the structure of instrumental music Radif.
This study has been compiled with a descriptive and historical approach, based on library studies of music history resources and travelogues. It can be said that the life and survival of the instrumental music of Iran has, some how, been due to the blessing of religious music from the past centuries until today. The use of melodies and corners (Goshe) in all kinds of religious music forms is a sign of two-way relations between Radifs of instrumental music and religious music of Shiism.
