Abstract:
The present study was conducted with the aim of the effectiveness of compassion-based therapy on mental
distress and Alexithymia in caregivers of schizophrenic patients. The current study is a semi-experimental type
in which a pre-test and post-test design was used with an experimental group and a control group. The statistical
population of the present study was mothers of schizophrenic patients in Rasht. In order to carry out this
research, 40 people who met the criteria for entering the present study were selected from among the referents
and randomly replaced in the experimental group and the control group, with 20 people in each group. The data
collection tool was the Toronto Alexithymia Questionnaire (Alexithymia-Tas) and the Simon and Gaher
Psychological Distress Questionnaire. Compassion-focused treatment content was implemented for 8 sessions
(90 minutes each session) for the experimental group, and the control group members were placed on the
waiting list. Data analysis using covariance analysis showed: The approach based on compassion therapy
significantly reduced Alexithymia and psychological distress of caregivers of schizophrenia patients (P≤0.01).
The results emphasize the importance of using compassion-based therapy in reducing Alexithymia and
psychological distress of caregivers of mentally ill patients
