THE JAWIDAN KHIRAD OF MISKAWAIH (Translated from the German Original of Prof W.
The translator is at present engaged in research on the Jawidan Khirad of Miskawaih and will publish the results in a later issue of Islamie Culture.
, Jawidan Khirad, B Under this title the work has been known for a long time in Persian transla• tions or derivative recensions; it is mentioned more or less briefly in the catalogues of manuscripts and hand-books; c_ one of these texts was printed in Tehran in 1877.
He only states that in his youth he read about the book Jawidan Khirad in a work of al-Jahiz, but he does not seem to mention the exact date.
The Hoshang-book existed also outside Miskawaih's work: the editor of the Arabic text has used a manuscript of that separate opus.
Miskawaih has added to the original Jawidan Khirad, or Hoshang-books, a whole series of other works of similar content, wisdom literature of the Persians, Arabs, Indians and Greeks.
It must, however, be confessed that the identification of passages in the Pahlavi texts with those in Miskawaih's work has not as yet progressed very far.
Miskawaih begins his well known history Tajarib al-Umam with the life and times of Hoshang the first King of Iran.
The very first chapter of the book, according to the heading, a selection from Adarbad's admonitions to bis son, agrees well with the corresponding Pahlavi Andarz , but compared with the original, the Arabic maxims appear in the greatest disorder.
