Cemeteries and Shrines in our ancient history, not only in the history
of Baghdad, but even in some of their remnants, may constitute the most
important icon to understand historical stages, know mentalities and
comprehend the emergence of religious and social traditions that are still
present till modern days . Tombs, burial shrines and mausoleums in a society
that glorifies the dead and fears death at the same time , are monuments that
stand in the witness’s position with the historian, directing and providing
him with so many hypotheses, and justifying the outcome of his research
when he finds in the deserted land a lot of ruins, then concludes that the
country was inhabited in the past. But if he does not see anything, he cannot
reach any result, as the incident occurs and gets embodied in a witness.
When the historian finds a witness, he inevitably recalls the incident
from which he abstracts his questions, and from which he searches for
new evidences that may help him to know everything about the incident.
Cemeteries, shrines, and books of merits remain living witnesses of any
historical process, and are clues for the understanding of the present too.
The book Cemeteries and Mausoleums beside the City of Peace, by Ali Bin
Angab, is not only a painting that depicts the life of the Baghdadi citizen,
but also transmits, precisely, the daily disorders of the Arab society in the
Medieval ages in relationship to death, the dead and their shrines. This does
not concern simple stories, but rather daily livelihood that hides concerns,
feelings and a whole culture, which make the book of Ali bin Angab worthy
of more than a pause, and more than a reading from multiple perspectives.
