The tribal wars and security crises observed across Africa in general, and
particularly in Cameroon, have led to the proliferation of social media platforms as spaces for
exchange. In response to socio-political events, these platforms often showcase passionate discourses
that frequently escalate into hate speech. This deviant behavior can be attributed to the unlimited
freedom of expression that characterizes these forums (such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger,
etc.). Consequently, sides are quickly taken, and individuals enthusiastically defend their opinions in
these virtual spaces, which serve to reinforce a discursive staging with pathemic aims.
Following the presidential elections in October 2018 in Cameroon, the results sparked open
contestations from supporters of the two main political parties (RDPC/MRC), reaching a climax on
social media platforms. Verbal violence was observed, transforming this media space into a veritable
battlefield: it became a stage for argumentative protestation where verbal violence took center stage
for linguists. How do internet users discursively stage the expression of violence on social media? In
other words, how does violence manifest itself verbally and linguistically on these platforms? Through
a multidisciplinary discourse analysis, this article delves into the argumentative orientation of these
discourses which, far from calming the situation, may lead to a form of destabilization of social
cohesion.
By examining the ways in which violence is expressed through language on social media platforms,
this study sheds light on the potential consequences of such discourse on societal harmony. The
analysis seeks to understand how arguments are constructed and disseminated online, contributing to a
broader understanding of the role of language in shaping public discourse and influencing social
dynamics. Ultimately, this research aims to highlight the importance of responsible communication
practices in digital spaces and promote dialogue that fosters understanding and unity rather than
division and conflict.
Moreover, this study also explores the impact of linguistic strategies employed by internet users to
convey messages of violence or aggression within online interactions. By analyzing the rhetorical
devices and linguistic markers used in these discourses, researchers can gain insights into how
individuals manipulate language to incite or perpetuate conflict in virtual environments. This
examination not only provides valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying online aggression but
also offers opportunities for developing strategies to mitigate harmful communication patterns and
promote more constructive dialogue among diverse online communities.
Furthermore, this research delves into the sociolinguistic implications of violent discourse on social
media platforms, exploring how language shapes perceptions of power dynamics and influences social
relationships within digital spaces. By investigating the ways in which verbal violence is enacted and normalized online, scholars can gain a deeper understanding of the underlying social structures that perpetuate conflict and division in virtual communities. This analysis not only sheds light on the complex interplay between language, power, and identity in online interactions but also underscores the urgent need for critical reflection on the ethical responsibilities of internet users in shaping digital discourse.
In conclusion, this extended abstract highlights the pressing need for scholarly inquiry into the discursive practices that fuel violence and conflict on social media platforms. By examining the rhetorical strategies and linguistic mechanisms employed by individuals to express aggression and hostility online, researchers can uncover valuable insights into the socio-political dynamics at play in digital communication. Through a multidisciplinary approach to discourse analysis, this study aims to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of how language shapes social interactions and influences collective behavior in virtual spaces. Ultimately, by raising awareness of the potential consequences of violent discourse on social media, this research seeks to promote dialogue, empathy, and mutual respect as essential components of responsible online communication practices.
