Abstract: Playing the role of the mother and its incompatibility with the profession of the writer was one of the subjects of discussion in 19th-century French literature. However, there have been women who combine the two in order to gain recognition for their social role as cultivated mothers. They have done this with strategies, one of which, and perhaps the most effective is to adopt a male name to publish literary works. The masculine name deprives the author of her maternal identity and delegates to her the nature and legal status of an author. For this, we have chosen Nelida, the novel published by Marie d’Agoult in 1846 under the false signature of Daniel Stern. The title of the work, in interaction with the author's alias, calls the reader to a meta-reading of the text and contributes to the rehabilitation of the prestige of the mother-author. In this reading process, which is done from the name of the writer, her life, and her choice of the title of the work, the reader reaches a new conception of feminine literature which until now considered itself immoral and out of the ordinary. Also, what the mother-author understands by the adoption of a male first name and what the reader perceives from it both reflect the conditions that govern the social life of an intellectual woman who, ironically, is also a mother.
